BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Robert J. Genco, D.D.S., Ph.D., distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Oral Biology at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, was installed as president of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) at its annual meeting, held April 17-20 in Acapulco, Mexico.
With more than 8,000 members in more than 60 countries, the association represents all disciplines and specialties in dental research. The 4,000-member American Association for Dental Research, of which Genco is a past president, is the largest division of the international association.
The IADR's goal is to promote research and the communication of research results within the scientific community, and to the dental profession and the public.
An internationally-known dental researcher, Genco is editor of the Journal of Periodontology, the most widely read publication in its field worldwide.
Professor of oral biology and periodontology at the University at Buffalo, Genco also is director of its Periodontal Disease Clinical Research Center. He serves as the dental school's associate dean for graduate studies and director of the fellowship program in immunology and periodontology.
A member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Genco has served on the editorial boards of publications such as Infection and Immunity, Immunochemistry, Journal of Dental Research and Immunological Investigations and as associate editor of the Journal of Periodontal Research and Oral Microbiology and Immunology. He has published more than 200 professional journal articles and edited four texts, including a book, Contemporary Periodontics, that is used as a standard text in many dental schools.
Genco has been a member of the UB dental school's faculty since 1967.
A 1963 cum laude graduate of the UB School of Dental Medicine, Genco received his Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967.
A native of Silver Creek, N.Y., he and his wife, Sandra, live in Buffalo.
