Smart Economic Growth

Buffalo’s history of innovation and entrepreneurship is still alive. UB is playing a key role in creating a new knowledge-based economy for our region.

UB couldn’t be prouder to be a part of Buffalo’s legacy of innovation and entrepreneurship. Big things are happening now in Buffalo. An exciting renaissance is taking place, and UB faculty and research are at the forefront of the region’s growth.

Impact of Research

A major economic engine for Buffalo Niagara and upstate New York, UB has an annual economic impact of $1.7 billion, including more than $348.2 million in research spending, most of it from federal agencies like the National Institutes of Health.

As a research university, UB is a major source of innovation in Western New York. The university leverages its strengths in knowledge generation to yield tangible economic results. The transfer of new technology to the private sector benefits the public while providing opportunities for further development and commercial applications of our researchers’ work.

On our campuses, UB’s research funding is responsible for more than 3,000 jobs, including faculty researchers, technical staff, research assistants and administrative staff.

Knowledge Economy

UB 2020, the university’s strategic initiative for enhancing educational opportunities and advancing life-enhancing research discoveries, is creating a robust knowledge-based economy in Western New York.

Many different schools within the university are leading UB 2020’s efforts to advance research and foster community partnerships.

UB 2020’s accomplishments include a groundbreaking collaboration between the university and Kaleida Health to construct the Clinical and Translational Research Center and the Global Vascular Institute.

The combined facility, on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, brings together Kaleida Health physicians and UB researchers in an effort to deliver state-of-the-art clinical care and help Buffalo attract and retain major figures in the health sciences.
